What if the power of Artificial Intelligence wasn’t confined to a handful of global corporations, but was accessible to every single Indian? What if we could harness the collaborative spirit of the Open Source ecosystem to power this democratic shift?
This very question has been the central driving force behind my work and a quiet obsession over the past several months. Itโs a question that challenges the status quo and imagines a future where technology truly serves the many, not just the few. It led me down a path of incredible collaborations with some of the most brilliant minds Iโve had the privilege to meet, and today, it culminates in a moment I am incredibly proud to share.
From Concept to Community
An idea this ambitious cannot be built in isolation. It requires a symphony of voices and a coalition of the willing. I am deeply grateful to all the key stakeholdersโfrom passionate developers in open-source communities, to pioneering researchers in our top academic institutions, and forward-thinking leaders in the industryโwho have been instrumental in shaping this concept and nurturing it into a tangible reality.
Today, after months of dedicated effort, I am thrilled to officially announce the launch of theย Bharat AI Mission.
What is the Bharat AI Mission?
At its core, the Bharat AI Mission is a national-level, nonprofit-led, open-source community. We are singularly dedicated to making the vision of “AI for All” a reality in India.
Our mission is threefold:
- Build:ย Create foundational, open-source AI tools, models, and datasets tailored for the Indian context.
- Empower:ย Enable students, researchers, startups, and developers with the knowledge and resources to innovate.
- Collaborate:ย Foster a vibrant ecosystem where industry, academia, and government work together to create AI that is open, ethical, and inclusive for India.
Our Founding Partners and Pillars of Support
We are building this together, and we are not starting from scratch. We are already working closely with incredible partners like Spoken Tutorial and FOSSEE, and academic powerhouses like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)to create open datasets, localized AI tools, and accessible educational content.
In this journey, I want to extend a special and personal note of gratitude to Prof. Kannan Moudgalya of IIT Bombay. As the leader of the Spoken Tutorial project and a phenomenal contributor to the open-source movement in India, his wisdom during our early discussions was invaluable. His immediate offer of collaboration was a key catalyst that transformed an idea into a concrete plan. Thank you, Professor, for your faith and support!
Furthermore, this mission is amplified by the crucial support of government bodies like IndiaAI, Niti Aayog, and the MeitY Startup Hub (a MeitY-NASSCOM Center of Excellence), alongside other non-governmental organizations. Their role as enablers and catalysts will be vital in helping us achieve the scale required for Indiaโs next great technological leap.
An Open Invitation: Let’s Build for Bharat
This announcement is more than just an update; it is an open invitation.
If you believe in the power of using technology for good, if you are passionate about building solutions for Bharat, and if you feel that the future of AI should be collaborative and open, then we need your voice, your expertise, and your passion.
Let’s build the future of AIโfor India, with India, and by India.
